He was born Richard Lewis Springthorpe on August 23, 1949 in Sydney, Australia. As lead guitarist for The Zoot in 1969, Rick Springfield and company experienced considerable success with Eleanor Rigby in their homeland.
When the band split in 1971, Springfield signed a solo deal spawning the hit Speak To The Sky, almost immediately catching the attention of teeny-bopper magazines such as 16 and Tiger Beat. Almost all the tracks presented here come from his third solo effort, the 1974 album Mission Magic.
He was not only a teen idol, but even had his own cartoon (also called Mission: Magic!). The songs from this album would be featured in the animated series, which lasted almost two years. Top session players were brought in for the recording even the rhythm section of The Wrecking Crew (bassist Carol Kaye and drummer Jim Keltner), who played on many of Motown’s biggest hits. The other players included bassist Lee Sklar with drummers Russ Kunkel, Barry Morgan and Ray Arnolt. Springfield played everything else all vocals, guitar and keyboards.
He would later become a TV star, most notable on the shows General Hospital and High Tide, jumpstarting his recording career all over again. Tim Branom
